W. Pitt Turner IV has been a Principal of Uptime Institute Professional Services since 1993 and its Executive Director since 2005. He leads a dynamic team of highly skilled professionals who specialize in data centers.
Mr. Turner co-authored the Uptime Institute, Inc. white paper Industry Standard Tier Classification Define Site Infrastructure Performance. This seminal document established a system of correlating site infrastructure with availability requirements. The Tier classification system has become the industry standard and continues to be emulated throughout the world. Additionally, he has authored or co-authored a number of articles and white papers relating to data center design, construction, or operation.
Mr. Turner's projects include guiding the construction of United Parcel Service's new Windward data center in Atlanta and the Ramapo center in Mahwah, New Jersey. These projects were the world's first Tier IV data centers.
His responsibilities for typically projects include obtaining program approval, selecting the design and construction teams, guiding the design process to obtain the greatest value for the client, monitoring construction, developing commissioning standards and scripts, and leading the transition to operations.
Mr. Turner has held project oversight roles for U.S. Bank, Nationwide, Safeway, Target, United Parcel Service, Depository Trust, Hewlett-Packard, HSBC, MasterCard, Sprint, State Farm, and many other major or confidential clients.
He has been the principal responsible for Continuous Availability ReviewSM teams since 1994. This has involved comprehensive diagnostic reviews of well over 100 sites.
Previously, Mr. Turner was senior project manager for Pacific Bell's Fairfield Data Center where he was wholly responsible for concept development, design, construction, and start-up of the 200,000-ft2 facility. His work included the benchmarking of other major data centers to establish the business-process improvements necessary to support the design concept. Under his leadership, this project received numerous internal, professional, and international awards.
Mr. Turner received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California Davis, and a MBA with honors from Golden Gate University. He is a professional engineer in California, Missouri, and New Mexico.
