ASSUMPTION #3: TECHNOLOGICAL
ADVANCEMENTS ARE FOLLOWING
HIGH DENSITY DEMANDS
The need for faster processing, more power and
subsequently, better cooling has shaped a trend
in technological developments of data center
infrastructure. High density cooling at the rack
level, such as rear-door cooling applications,
have become much more popular because it
decreases square footage for the same amount
of compute power. As previously mentioned,
understanding the type of solution required is
critical to engineering a data center that takes
into consideration everything from power
density to whitespace to cooling solutions as
part of the initial design process.
ASSUMPTION #4: RISK AVERSION
AND PREDICTABILITY ARE KEY
ATTRIBUTES IN MODULAR
CONSTRUCTION
There’s no doubt about it - demand for modular
data centers and infrastructure is poised for
major growth, as indicated by a number of
industry factors such as new mergers and
acquisitions, awarded contracts, and an
increase in the number of competitors. Two
factors seem to be driving this train forward: risk
aversion and cost predictability.
Delays in field-built construction are fairly
common as contractors must deal with
permitting and code compliance regulations,
occasional supply issues, and weather-related
disruptions. In a factory setting where permits
and codes are already in place, an inventory of
supplies already exists, and weather events have
little effect on productivity, both costs and risks
are significantly reduced.
Additionally, replicating a particular design
again and again reduces the risk of unexpected
issues that are typical of first-time construction
in a field-built scenario. Replication of design
also translates to quality and allows for
resources to be bought in bulk, further reducing
costs.
Overall, the learning curve for modularity in the
data center industry is unquestionably higher
today, as is the demand for it. Now that the
industry has a solid grasp on the concept and its
benefits, knowing how to buy it will be the next
challenge.
